Which one is "better"? Neither. They're good at different things. Krabi is where you go to do things. Koh Samui is where you go to slow down.
Krabi, if you want to be out on the water every day
Krabi is on the Andaman Sea, on Thailand's west coast, and the scenery is the reason to go: huge limestone cliffs dropping straight into green water. Most days here start with a longtail boat. The 4-Island tour (Poda, Chicken, Tup and Phra Nang Cave) is the classic, and Koh Phi Phi with Maya Bay is a long but unforgettable day trip.
Railay Beach can only be reached by boat, which is part of its charm. There's also kayaking through the mangroves at Ao Thalane, and the Emerald Pool and hot springs inland.
It's also easier on the wallet. There are plenty of cheap flights from Bangkok, hotels at every price point, and Ao Nang has lots of halal food.
Go between November and April. From May to October the Andaman side gets rough seas, and some boat trips don't run.
Koh Samui, if the plan is a pool, a view and nothing else
Samui sits in the Gulf of Thailand on the other side of the country. The beaches are softer and calmer: Chaweng for a bit of life, Lamai for something in between, Bophut and the Fisherman's Village for quiet evenings. This is where the good pool villas are, which is why honeymooners love it.
For a day out, take a boat to Ang Thong Marine Park, a scatter of more than 40 islands with a lagoon viewpoint that's worth the climb. Divers can hop over to Koh Tao.
Getting there costs more. Flights into Samui airport are limited and pricier, so some people fly to Surat Thani and take the ferry instead.
Go between January and August. October to December is Samui's rainy season, which is the opposite of Krabi's.
Side by side
| Krabi | Koh Samui | |
|---|---|---|
| Feels like | Adventure, boats, cliffs | Resort, pool villa, slow days |
| Best months | Nov – Apr | Jan – Aug |
| Cost | Good value | Mid to premium |
| Good for | Friends, families, first-timers | Honeymooners, couples, slow travellers |
Or pair either one with Bangkok
The most popular shape for a trip from Dhaka is two or three nights in Bangkok, then three or four on a beach. With nine or ten days you can do both beaches, but check the season first, because Krabi and Samui peak at different times.
How we can help
We handle the Thailand e-visa, flights from Dhaka or Chattogram, hotels at the level you want (our Beyond Go, Explore and Escape tiers), island tours, transfers and halal-friendly dining. For honeymoons we can add the extras: a private dinner, room decoration, a speedboat day.
