Thailand is under three hours from Dhaka, which makes it the easiest "proper" holiday for most Bangladeshi families. The mistake people make is trying to see everything in a week. Pick two, maybe three, of these five and give them time.

And if you're travelling with family, don't stop at Bangkok and Pattaya. Krabi, Koh Samui and Chiang Mai are where Thailand is at its most beautiful and most comfortable for all ages. We've written a separate guide on Thailand beyond Bangkok and Pattaya.

Bangkok

Give it 2–3 nights. Start early at the Grand Palace and Wat Pho before the heat and the crowds, then take the river boat instead of a taxi. Shopping is half the reason many people come: MBK for bargains, ICONSIAM for the mall-as-a-destination experience, Chatuchak on weekends. End one evening on a rooftop or a river dinner cruise. Phuket

Give it 3–4 nights. Thailand's biggest island has a beach for every mood: Patong if you want nightlife, Kata and Karon if you want families and calm water. Old Phuket Town is lovely in the late afternoon. The boat trips to Phi Phi and Phang Nga Bay are what people remember. Go between November and April.

Krabi

Give it 3–4 nights. Quieter than Phuket, cheaper, and in our view more beautiful. Railay Beach, island hopping and kayaking are the highlights. Not sure between Krabi and Samui? →

Chiang Mai

Give it 3 nights. This is a completely different Thailand: temples in the old city, the drive up to Doi Suthep, night markets, and an ethical elephant sanctuary (choose one where you don't ride). November to February is cool and pleasant. Add a day trip to the White Temple in Chiang Rai if you can.

Koh Samui

Give it 3–4 nights. The honeymoon island, known for pool villas, calm beaches and a boat day to Ang Thong Marine Park. Go between January and August, and avoid the October–December rains.

Two things to sort out first

You'll need a visa before you fly (see our Thailand visa guide), and the TDAC arrival card in the 3 days before you land. And if you're travelling between November and February, book early. It's peak season and fares climb fast.

Tell us your dates, budget and who's travelling, and we'll put the whole trip together: visa, flights, hotels, transfers and tours.
