Ask most people in Dhaka about Thailand and they'll say Bangkok and Pattaya. Bangkok deserves its reputation. Pattaya is fine for a day or two, but it isn't where most families want to spend a holiday with their children and parents. They want somewhere they can relax together without feeling uncomfortable.

The good news is that Thailand is much bigger than those two cities. Some of the most beautiful parts of the country are also the most family-friendly, and they're only a short domestic flight from Bangkok. If you have 10 to 12 days (your tourist visa usually allows up to 60), this is the Thailand worth seeing.

Krabi: cliffs, calm water and easy island days

Krabi is where we'd send most families first. The beaches at Ao Nang are relaxed, the island-hopping trips are gentle enough for children and grandparents, and there's plenty of halal food. Take a longtail boat to the 4 Islands, spend a day at Railay Beach, or kayak through the mangroves. For snorkelling, the water around Koh Phi Phi and the smaller islands is clear and full of fish. Best from November to April.

Koh Samui: slow days and good villas

Samui suits families who want space and quiet: villas with private pools, calm beaches like Bophut and Lamai, and the evening walking street at Fisherman's Village. A boat day to Ang Thong Marine Park is the highlight. It's pricier than Krabi but very comfortable, and it's at its best from January to August.

Chiang Mai: temples, mountains and cool air

Chiang Mai is a completely different side of Thailand, and often the part families love most. The old city is full of temples, Doi Suthep has views over the whole valley, and the night markets are great for an easy evening walk with children. Visit an ethical elephant sanctuary, where you feed and bathe the elephants instead of riding them. From November to February the weather is cool and pleasant.

Phuket: for the adventurous ones

If someone in the family wants action, Phuket has it. There's snorkelling and diving trips to the Phi Phi and Similan Islands, parasailing over the beaches, sea kayaking in Phang Nga Bay and plenty of water sports. Choose a family area like Kata or Karon rather than staying in Patong, and you get the adventure without the late-night crowd.

Practical things that make it easy

  • Domestic flights from Bangkok to Krabi, Phuket, Chiang Mai and Samui are short, usually around an hour or so. We book them together with your international tickets so the connections work.
  • Halal food is easy to find in Krabi and around Phuket, which have large Muslim communities. Elsewhere we plan it in advance.
  • Seasons are different on each coast. Krabi and Phuket are best from November to April, and Samui from January to August. We'll match the route to your dates.
  • Visa first: Bangladeshis need a visa before flying. See our Thailand visa guide.

Tell us who's travelling, how many days you have and your budget, and we'll plan a Thailand trip that goes beyond Bangkok and Pattaya: visa, flights, hotels, transfers and island days, all in one place.
